Life, literature and the pursuit of happiness
Article Abstract:
The evolution of American literature took time, and it was not until the late 1850s that it began to emerge as a true form. The US was still forming through that time, which made its literature less stable. The preference for European literature was strong through that point as well. The realization that the US was boundless is reflected in its early literature by such authors as Herman Melville, Walt Whitman and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The imagination spawned by the realization of the lack of boundaries was tremendous.
