Competitiveness in the '90s: we need to refocus on people issues to stay in the race
Article Abstract:
The central issue to increasing the competitiveness of US industries is ensuring their ability to provide a rising standard of living to US workers through superior performance of US products in the global economy. US corporate managers must: focus on people issues; introduce leaner production systems; and remain flexible to a changing environment. Management must also: emphasize the training of employees; introduce participatory management; and encourage an entrepreneurial spirit among leadership. Some effective steps to achieve positive results include: reevaluating staff and support contributions; adjusting accounting to reflect changes in the economic environment; and re-analyzing costing systems.

Who is the customer?
Article Abstract:
Companies frequently lose sight of the fact that trade customers are their true customers; they focus instead on their internal organizational structures, and become unresponsive to the marketplace. Companies that focus on their trade customers are usually innovative, constantly review and improve activities, and find their quality control function shifting to line workers. This results in increased product quality, reduction of time from customer order to delivery, and reduction of time for bringing new products to market.
