Looming over Northwest talks: other unions
Article Abstract:
Northwest Airlines must reach an agreement with its pilots' union without establishing an expensive pattern for its other labor unions. The carrier has six unions that are calling for a new labor agreement. Some observers say that had Northwest not been confronted with other talks with its machinists and flight attendant unions, it would have made a much more lucrative offer to its pilots union. The other unions are already calling for the same level of concessions that the pilots will receive.

TWA, pilots union reach agreement on 4-year contract
Article Abstract:
Trans World Airlines (TWA) has reached a tentative agreement with its pilots union over a four-year labor contract. The new contract would provide TWA's 2,500 unionzed pilots with their first pay hike in more than a decade. The leadership of the Air Line Pilots Association gave its approval to the proposed contract. The contract must now be approved by members of the union. The contract is scheduled to go into effect on September 1, 1998.

Northwest Air's mechanics pick different union
Article Abstract:
10,000 mechanics at Northwest Airlines chose to leave the International Assn. of Machinists and join instead the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Assn. by a 57% vote of its members. The group thinks it will get better union representation with the smaller organization where it will not be lumped with clerical workers in negotiations. Since 96% of the group's members voted, it is seen as an important issue to the mechanics.
