Lotus creates controversy by extending benefits to partners of gay employees
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp faces criticism and praise from employees as it becomes the nation's best-known company to offer health insurance to partners of gay and lesbian employees. Some employees say the benefit discriminates against heterosexual couples who choose not to marry. Other heterosexual employee fear the new policy will create an increasingly gay workforce at Lotus, and some employees fear it will increase their insurance premiums. Lotus says the policy corrects an inequity and allows an estimated 150 eligible employees who cannot legally marry to obtain insurance for their 'sole spousal equivalent.' One study shows that only 17 of civic or corporate health benefit plans offer domestic partner coverage. But with the traditional nuclear family comprising 25 percent of the US population, other companies may follow Lotus's lead. DEC, for one, is creating a definition of family and plans to rewrite benefit policies.
