Lotus spreadsheet to run on IBM's mainframe units
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp introduces Lotus 1-2-3M, the popular spreadsheet program for IBM mainframe computers. Lotus 1-2-3M was originally announced in 1987 and intended for a 1988 release. Subsequent technical problems delayed it and other versions of 1-2-3. Upon its initial introduction, Lotus 1-2-3M was much sought after. Now that spreadsheets on microcomputers are about as powerful as anyone will ever need, 1-2-3M's popularity is probably weakened. About half of the corporations with mainframes who were contacted by a computer market research firm expressed interest in the product. Lotus 1-2-3M will likely be used primarily to consolidate the business plans of all of a company's subsidiaries. Price has not been announced, but mainframe software typically costs several times the price of microcomputer software. IBM will have the job of marketing the software.

IBM makes several mainframe models available early, bolstering sales hopes
Article Abstract:
IBM introduces several midsized mainframe computers earlier than expected. IBM models 520, 640, 660 and 740, which had been scheduled for introduction in Mar 1992, are available now, and the 860 model, which had been expected at the end of Jun, is also available. IBM, which says manufacturing operations have been implemented faster than expected, hopes that sales will improve in consequence. IBM also introduces two low-end mainframes: the 180, which will cost $462,000, will be available in Apr 1992, and the 200, priced at $350,000, will be available in the 3rd qtr of the year. IBM's stock rose 50 cents when the news was announced, closing at $90.25. In other news, IBM agrees to license microcomputer technology to Core International Inc. The agreement is seen as part of an ongoing attempt by IBM to make money by licensing technology to other companies.

IBM unveils products to speed writing of mainframe software
Article Abstract:
IBM introduces four new products to ease the task of writing software for mainframe computers. The products will be available in 1990. The much-discussed Repository, a data base for information that will discipline the writing of software, will be available in Jun. Products that help with other aspects of the software-development process are: DevelopMate, which lets companies produce prototypes of the software they are designing, available in Dec; The Software Analysis Test Tool, available in Mar, which helps manage the testing process; and an enhancement of Cross System Product, which generates software code, available in Nov. These products should spur interest in computer-aided software engineering (CASE), an area in which IBM is investing.
