Australia's luxury goods retailers and duty free retailers are experiencing financial difficulties in 1998 due to the Asian economic crisis. Asian tourists purchase 10% to 90% of the luxury goods in various stores in Australia. Upscale retailers entered the Australian market in abundance between 1988 and 1998 because of the sophisticated Australian shoppers and the increase in Australian tourism.

Japan's Kao Corp. entered the Australian market in 1992 with BioZet concentrated laundry powder detergent. It introduced Biore, a skin care product, in Sep 1997, and will introduce Magiclean Wiper, a floor cleaner, in Oct 1998. More products will be introduced in the Australian marketplace throughout the end of the century.

The effectiveness of advertising and marketing is difficult to define precisely as percentage increase in return on investment. A method is being evolved by the Australian Marketing Institute to measure the benefits from marketing in a more definite manner so that marketers get their due respect within an organization.
