Lyme-disease vaccine is 76% to 92% effective
Article Abstract:
Research reports from SmithKline Beechman PLC and Rhone-Poulenc SA show that the Lyme-disease vaccine is 76% to 92% effective in protecting adults against Lyme-disease infection. The studies involve two different versions of essentially the same vaccine. Both work by triggering the body's immune system to generate anti-bodies that can destroy the tick-borne bacterium which causes the disease. The studies don't prove the vaccines can prevent infection among children. The vaccine may be available in early 1999.
