Mabe's president Luis Berrondo Avalos on teams and industry competitiveness

Pres Luis Berrondo Avalos of Mabe, Mexico's largest appliance manufacturer presented his views on the current competitive challenges being faced by Mexican firms, the labor climate, training, the use of self-managed teams and the importance of Mabe's training and development programs in managing its 15,000 employees. Berrondo said Mexico's competitive advantages include lower labor costs and longer working hours. Mabe requires its workers to devote a six percent of their time to training because of its positive effects on productivity and competitiveness.

Taking self-managed teams to Mexico
Article Abstract:
A group of management experts conducted research on the impact of empowerment and self-managed teams on the productivity of Mexican firms and multinational firms operating in Mexico. The researchers interviewed 243 executives and their experiences with work teams. They compared the behavioral standards of self-managed teams with the relevant dimensions of Mexico's corporate culture. The most prominent problems encountered in forming teams are leadership, training, motivation and value congruence.

Article Abstract:
Mexican Institutional Revolutionary Party Pres Jose Antonio Gonzalez Fernandez presented his views on his country's current economic and political conditions, competitiveness, unemployment, the government's role in labor and business and challenges anticipated in the new labor culture. Gonzalez said that one of the most important changes in his country was the repudiation of import substitution policy and the expanded participation of all Mexicans in the democratic process.
