John Major, beset by Conservative Party infighting, resigned his post as Tory leader on June 22, 1995, to force a July 4 leadership vote. Major will be opposed in the vote by John Redwood, a former cabinet member with ties to the anti-European Union (EU) Tories. Major remains prime minister.
