Managers talk orbits, but still walk indexes
Article Abstract:
Australia has followed the US' lead by embracing an "index-plus-satellite" approach to superannuation fund portfolio management. Funds using that approach maintain a core of assets in index funds and place remaining assets in more actively managed "satellite" funds. In the UK, fund managers are beginning to adopt an "index-plus-satellite-plus-orbit" approach, in which 10-20% of assets are placed in absolute-returns or very-high-alpha funds.

The strange, troubled world of the tax office
Article Abstract:
The Australian Taxation Office is now reversing its interpretation of tax laws by stopping the promotion of tax-optional schemes and asking investors to repay billions. The Office issued a press release stating that contributions to controller super schemes are not only non-deductible but subject to fringes benefits tax. Tax advisers are angry and claim there is a flaw in Section 274 of the Tax Act.
