Managing the coordination of social services in the mixed economy of welfare: competition, cooperation or common cause
Article Abstract:
The delivery of personal social services (PSS) by UK local authorities within a mixed economy of welfare provision is examined. Three localities were studied, with each responding to local conditions and using a different method to provide PSS. The first location used the hierarchical model, entailing the coordination of delivery by bureaucratic and vertical management processes. The second area provided services through market mechanisms, by competition between service providers according to price. The third used clan relationships which are informal ties to local groups.

Business ethics and social theory: postmodernizing the ethical
Article Abstract:
Business 'sciences' and moral philosophy have both been major influences on the concept of business ethics, with some philosophers perceiving some business practices as fundamentally corrupt and in need of justification or transformation. Morals are not the same as ethics, although in business terms both involve elements of judgement and decision-making. 'Bad' business involves decision-making on issues that are not obviously wrong or right, but the decisions must also take social considerations into account.

The social anthropology of management
Article Abstract:
Social anthropology can help managers to realise their knowledge and insight into the nature of their work, particularly in the field of management education and research. Social anthropology provides a method for research in the use of ethnography and an understanding of the cultural processes used within organisations, such as symbolic understanding and communication. The discussion characterises management and looks into multi and interdisciplinary research in management.
