The impact of compulsory competitive tendering on refuse collection services
Article Abstract:
Previous research on UK public services has been limited to the practice of competitive tendering in such services. However, with the approval of the Local Government Act of 1988, which makes competitive tendering compulsory, there arises a need to understand compulsory competitive tendering as it is practiced in the country. A dataset on refuse collection costs and services from 1984 to 1994 allows a glimpse into the practice of compulsory competitive tendering and its impact on refuse collection costs and services.

Compulsory competitive tendering in the NHS: a new look at some old estimates
Article Abstract:
The policy of compulsive competitive tendering for support services in the National Health Service may be considered a success because it has reduced costs, despite the intitial costs of establishing the system and making redundancies. Changes in working practices led to increased productivity and costs were reduced by cutting wages and conditions of service. In some cases the NHS has found it difficult to interest outside firms in bidding for a contract, or could provide the service more cheaply in-house.

The impact of excise duty changes on retail prices in the UK
Article Abstract:
UK excise duties are calculated annually because the rate is based on the quantity of the goods concerned and inflationary factors have to be considered. Excise duty price changes directly effects the level of demand and governmental indirect tax receipts. The study examines how far excise duties are transferred to the consumer through retail prices. Results show that with the exception of wine and tobacco, changes in excise duty rates are passed onto the consumer in higher retail prices.
