Manpower matters: welfare and working conditions
Article Abstract:
Employee relations concerns related to health and welfare in the UK, and around the world, are gaining management attention due to productivity trends requiring a return to 'basics,' and the evolving role of the welfare state. The 'basics' requires attention to every aspect of working conditions, from clean water in Third World countries to paternalism in Japan. The diminishing welfare state is reinforcing this new dependance on employers for provision of health care, fitness facilities, transportation, and housing. Organizations such as the International Labour Office are taking actions to reinforce this role for employers. Improving human relations represents a cost effective means for management to increase productivity.

Manpower matters: women's career developments
Article Abstract:
Although women now make up 42 percent of Britain's workforce, only between 10 and 20 percent of all managers are female, and approximately 69 percent of Britain's working women are in clerical positions. Research into the causes for these discrepancies suggests three problem areas:(1) the women themselves, their lack of education or training for employment and their career breaks caused by family responsibilities, (2) traditional career and personnel policies that, while not overtly discriminatory, do not provide for the career development problems of women, and (3) organizational attitudes that work against women. All of these areas are discussed in detail.
