Funds reported an average loss of 4.1% on investments in balanced superannuation portfolios, assets consultants and fund managers are arguing about whether it is time for a change in the way long-term savings are invested in the end of the 2001-02 financial year. The combination of declining returns and increasing volatility suggests a need for more caution in portfolio construction.
