Megabyte markdown: memory gets cheaper
Article Abstract:
The stark decline in memory chip prices is causing user costs throughout the entire computer industry to fall at surprisingly fast rates, as supply overtakes demand in the fragile semiconductor marketplace. Prices for 8MB memory chips have dropped from $210 in Dec 1995 to approximately $105 in May 1996, a 50% decline that has led computer manufacturers to configure their systems with 16MB RAM more regularly. Analysts predict that new computers with 8MB will become scarce before 1997, as computer vendors leverage the affordability of 16MB RAM configurations. Enhanced memory chips can substantially decrease the time required to download files from the Internet as well as improve graphics handling.

From here to there
Article Abstract:
General Motors, the American Automobile Association and several government entities have joined forces to offer an electronic car-navigation system called TravTek in rental vehicles in Orlando, Florida. TravTek usually guides the tourist smoothly around the city, but it has difficulty negotiating Walt Disney World and lacks some information, such as the location of post offices. It is programmed with the general location of Disney World but not with details of navigation within the 43-square-mile complex. The device has problems if the user changes his mind on the way, and its list of restaurants is severely limited, including only establishments recommended by AAA.

Styles, strategies of chiefs differ like oil, water
Article Abstract:
Exxon's CEO Lee R. Raymond is a study in control and reserve; Mobil's Lucio A. Noto in street-wise pragmatism and candor. Both men are aged 60 and are said to be as different as oil and water. Because of Noto's connections and skills, Mobil has good relations in the Middle East. If there is a merger of these two oil giants, that will be an asset that Exxon gains. With oil prices the lowest they've been in a generation, a merger deal is expected.
