Merit pay-performance reviews: they just don't work!
Article Abstract:
Management at ABB Vetco Gray Inc. realized that its traditional merit-pay and performance-review system was no longer a viable compensation system. It found out that this pay structure supported hierarchy and was inappropriate to the company's reengineering effort. Moreover, the old scheme was deemed by employees as unfair and unrelated to performance, and increased labor costs. After discovering the ineffectiveness of its merit-pay package, ABB Vetco Gray decided to embrace an alternative pay structure. This new model features a market-driven base pay for each job, informal sessions for recognizing achievements and a profit-sharing plan for all employees based on targets. Employees are given the information they need to rally their support for the new model. As a result of this effort, employee performance has considerably improved over the months after its implementation.

They won't grow up
Article Abstract:
Biographies of such children's book writers Laura Ingalls Wilder, Margaret Wise Brown and Theodore Geisel depict them as childish adults. The success of their books shows their ability to relate to children, perhaps because of their child-like mentality, and utilize their imagination.
