Earnings have been strong year-over-year in 2000 and 2001 for the petroleum (producing) industry in the US and petroleum prices are also holding firm. Exploration spending is expected to increase in 2001 and will also expand into Canada and the Gulf of Mexico. There are several timely stocks for investors in this industry in 2001.

Consumption of aluminum in the US has decreased due to lower demand and production has also been scaled back. Prices of nickel and copper have decreased after peaking earlier. These stocks are not timely for the year 2001, but several have long-term potential.
