Sony, AOL join up to link PlayStation 2 to Internet in move to outflank Microsoft
Article Abstract:
America Online Inc. and Sony Corp. are contracting together to provide an Internet link for Sony's PlayStation 2 video-game console. The joint contract has been developed over several months and has been formed to grab a share of the high-speed-communications-to-home market which has been dominated by PCs and Microsoft. The alliance will challenge Microsoft's Xbox video-game system by providing a console that will also play DVDs and may later be enhanced with modems and accessories to allow consumers to store and download files.

Microsoft, AOL battle on Windows XP; talks on online deal falter, as sofware-maker plans instant-message future
Article Abstract:
Talks continue fitfully between Microsoft and AOL Time Warner Inc., but it appears unlikely that a deal will be reached to include AOL software in Windows XP when the operating system comes to market this fall. AOL calls the software anticompetitive, and anticipates that the bundled instant-messaging service will take customers away from a popular service offered by AOL.
