U.S. ends probe of Intel Corp.'s trade practices
Article Abstract:
The US Federal Trade Commission drops its restraint-of-trade investigation of Intel Corp. The two-year probe began when Intel competitors charged that the company's trade practices were unfair. The FTC considers the same allegations against Microsoft Corp, and a decision is expected the week of Jul 19, 1993. These investigations are significant because of the involvement of major US companies, and the treatment by the FTC indicates a laissez faire attitude on the part of the Clinton administration. One charge, submitted by Cyrix Corp, alleges that Intel is guilty of tying, selling a product only in a package with another. Competitor Advanced Micro Devices has its own antitrust case against Intel still pending.

Microsoft faces further scrutiny by antitrust enforcers; Justice Department's look at investment in Corel may test Bush approach
Article Abstract:
The Justice Department is investigating whether Microsoft's $135 million investment in Corel Corp. could decrease competition in the market for office software suites that have word-processing systems, graphics and spreadsheets, in markets where Microsoft already holds over 90% of the market share. The subpoena for Microsoft documents was signed by a Clinton appointee, Douglas Melamed, who succeeded Joel Klein when the later resigned as head of the antitrust division last year.
