AT&T plans to name Tobias to direct overseas lines in bid to speed growth
Article Abstract:
AT&T names Randall Tobias to supervise the company's overseas businesses. AT&T wants to speed growth in its international operations. The company also will establish an Operations Committee, which will manage AT&T's day-to-day activities. These moves are part of Chmn Robert E. Allen's overall strategy, which aims to transform AT&T into a more aggressive company with a strong presence in international markets. AT&T now derives about 15 percent of its annual $37 billion in revenue from overseas, but AT&T's recent acquisition of NCR Corp will greatly increase international operations because 62 percent of NCR's annual $6 billion in revenue comes from outside the US. According to Randall Tobias himself, overseas markets such as those in Eastern Europe, which are struggling to establish modern communications infrastructures, open up significant opportunities for AT&T.

Hackers open voice-mail door to others' phone lines
Article Abstract:
The current trend among computer hackers is to access corporate electronic mail systems and use the office phones to make long distance telephone calls. This illegal practise is under investigation by both the Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Current voice-mail systems have relatively simple access codes which are easy to crack. Some hackers have even changed the corporate passwords, rendering the e-mail system useless to company employees trying to access their messages. The long distance companies' clamp down on their own system abuses has led hackers to this new field of opportunity. Analysts believe that the only way for a corporation to avoid the abuse is to improve phone system security.

Pacific Bell tests fiber-optic lines for home phones
Article Abstract:
Pacific Bell is replacing copper wires to homes in two California communities so that the company can test fiber optics equipment. The projects, which will involve 394 homes in La Crescenta, CA, and another 295 homes in Hawthorne, CA, will start in fall 1992. According to Pacific Bell's Los Angeles VP and general manager, Chuck Johnston, the cost of fiber technology will likely soon be less than copper. John N. Kessler, president of Kessler Marketing Intelligence, reports that about 6,000 homes in the United States now are doing fiber optic trials. Kessler estimates that the number 'will grow tenfold' by 1993.
