Microsoft opens Windows in Japan, bringing fresh air to market's PC wars
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp releases its Japanese-language version of Microsoft Windows 3.1. The release is expected to help Microsoft gain more of Japan's software industry and stimulate sales of US microcomputers in Japan. The Japanese version of Windows 3.1 took a year longer than the English version to be released, and sales in Japan began slowly due to the poor performance of the 3.0 version. Microsoft expects sales of one million in Japan in the first year. Microcomputer manufacturers such as Compaq, IBM and Dell Computer Corp stand to benefit from the Japan Windows release as well. Japan's standards diversity will pose problems for Microsoft, according to analysts.

Microsoft to unveil post-PC era software
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp. is unveiling its plan to dominate software development in the Internet age by extending its Windows technology to include software development tools for creating Web-based applications and electronic commerce services. The decision marks a major shift away from Microsoft's PC-centered approach that encouraged developers to create programs that would work mainly with its Windows operating systems. The new initiative is dubbed Windows DNA 2000. It remains questionable whether Microsoft can successfully integrate the technical links between the Web and Windows while preserving its dominant position in the software industry.
