Modern Office Computer Test: Olympia's People
Article Abstract:
Olympia has jumped into the personal computer market with its 16-bit People microcomputer. The People uses the Intel 8086 processor with CP-M-86 operating system, plus MP-M, MSDOS and CCPM 86 capability when they become available. Four VHS videotapes and eleven demonstration disks constitute the unique but far-from-perfect tutorial system. Applications demonstrations are controlled by the dBASE II system. The Trendtext program along with the ninety-one key keyboard (twelve function keys), provides an excellent word processing application. The expandable 128 k processor, monitor, two disk drives and one-day training session retail for $5495 (Australia).

Digital Equipment's DECmate II is a microcomputer designed especially for word processing but capable of handling business functions, too. The package, listed at $5500 (Australia), consists of a 6120 processor, dual disk drives, ninety-six kilobyte memory, with Z80Z processor boards optional. The tutorial disk and manual are helpful. List processing and sorting are components of the word processing package. Math calculations capability in both the list processing and text editor modes is an option. The detached keyboard is designed to support word processing. Criticisms of a few WP functions such as deleting and underlining are included.
