Installing a System - Top Management Should Be Involved
Article Abstract:
The buyer of a word processing system, not the vendor, is ultimately responsible for the successful installation. A team consisting of operators, users, and management has the dual jobs of selecting and promoting the system. Vendors provide operators with concentrated exposure to word processing techniques, but operators need several weeks of practice to gain competence. Aspects of the work flow such as security, processing priorities, and simple control for evaluation should be designed. Operating procedures and procedures outlining the system's capabilities and limitations will promote smooth functioning.

Its Success Depends on Planning
Article Abstract:
Offices should automate by planning, not because of vendors' sales pitches. Nor should automation be implemented piecemeal with each department making individual decisions. The organization structure and business objectives should be studied first. Then the systems are planned to meet those objectives, including the manpower and resources needed to run them. While building on resources already available, technology will bring changes. The planning project requires members who understand data processing, word processing, communications, business, and people.
