Motorola video-display venture aims to wrest market share from Japanese
Article Abstract:
Motif Inc is a new joint venture between Motorola Inc and In Focus Systems Inc whose aim is to compete with the Japanese for market share in the video display panel market. The company aims to manufacture a new matrix liquid crystal display (LCD) by 1995. The new product will be used for wireless communications devices, television projectors and notebook computers and is expected to compete with Japanese active matrix LCDs, offering a similar product at a lower price. The LCD market is expected to total $2.5 billion in 1992, increasing to $8 billion by the year 2000. Competition between the US and Japan in this market, however, is dependent on Japanese companies' ability to improve manufacturing methods so that production of active-matrix displays will not be so expensive.
