Reflections on the Past, Present and Future of Retail Computer Technology
Article Abstract:
NCR Chairman William S. Anderson discusses the responsiblities the computer industry faces in bringing retailers tomorrow's technology and, secondly, those areas in which the retailing community can influence and make proper use of that technology. Continued developments in systems flexibility hinge primarily on two fronts, standardization and communications. The computer industry also has a responsibility to provide solutions to the software bottlenecks that exist in virtually every organization, to develop easier to use hardware and software products, and to continue to provide adequate support services. For their part, retailers must take a leading role in two areas, the support of Electronic Funds Transfer and the development of merchandise identification standards.
