NCR to unveil its new parallel processor today
Article Abstract:
NCR Corp will introduce a computer based on 'massively parallel processing,' on Mon, May 13, 1991. According to NCR, this product will be the most powerful commercial computer in the world. It uses a radical, unconventional design that connects as many as 288 Intel microprocessors resulting in a machine that has four times the power of a traditional mainframe computer at one-tenth the price. This is the first major move by NCR since the company agreed to be acquired by AT&T, and according to one industry observer, if NCR and AT&T can move into the lead in commercial parallel designs, they will be a significant competitive threat within two years. According to another observer, NCR's parallel design is a glimpse of the future representing 'the industry's Holy Grail.'

NCR expected to announce line's redesign; product changes to reflect sweeping commitment to Intel Corp.'s chips
Article Abstract:
NCR Corp announces a redesign of its product line based on use of Intel Corp's microprocessors and standard software. NCR is the first major manufacturer to commit to Intel's chips, which are much less costly than the custom chips that are now being used in most mid-sized and large computers. NCR's new product line targets a broad market by providing products ranging from laptops to mainframes. The move is bad news for Motorola Inc, which has been supplying processors for NCR's Tower computer line. One industry observer calls this 'the most significant computer announcement since the IBM PC' because it shows that companies are standardizing on Intel chips.
