Nabisco to take $406 million charge, cut 6% of work force in retrenchment

Nabisco's new CEO was hired to turn lagging sales around when he started in January. So the company will restructure its sales force, lay off about 3,500 people, increase advertising, and unload some unprofitable brands. No comment is made as to whom will be laid off, blue-collar or white-collar workers, nor how many plants will be closed or their locations. The ad spending on promoting cookies and crackers will increase by 30% over last year. Brands that might be sold off are Cream of Wheat, Grey Poupon and A1 condiments.

Kilts, has had to deal with falling sales since he took control of the company in early 1998. Mr. Kilts admitted that Nabisco's sales were struggling as a result of strong competition from Keebler Foods Co.

Vlasic hopes new marketing plan will perk up sales

Vlasic is hoping that Madison Avenue can prop up its disappointing sales. Operating earnings for Vlassic pickles and Swanson frozen dinners have been disappointing for two quarters. The products had belonged to Campbell Soup until March 1998. Campbell had cut advertising expenses on the products and then spun off Vlasic Foods International.
