Next Inc. introduces three computers, surprising industry with low pricing
Article Abstract:
Next Inc introduces three new microcomputers that are aggressively priced and include a model with a black-and-white monitor for $4,995, a model with a color monitor for $7,995 and a $12,000 model that will be available in early 1991. Next has already received 15,000 orders for the new computers, which is twice the amount of sales of the computer maker's original model. The black and white model uses the Motorola 68040 microprocessor and will begin shipping in Nov 1990. Customers agree that the new line of computers are more cost-effective and faster than previous models, but note that there is still too few software packages available for the machine. The Next computers use a unique operating system software that combines versions of Unix with a series of screen commands called Nextstep.

IBM and Apple to announce venture next week
Article Abstract:
IBM and Apple Computer Inc reportedly will sign a joint-venture contract on Wednesday, Oct 2, 1991, though the companies themselves have not confirmed this. Some industry observers caution that problems in negotiations between IBM and Apple could delay a definitive agreement. In Jul 1991, the two companies had announced tentative plans for such a venture, which is purposed to develop a new operating system. The planned company would be located in the Silicon Valley, in California.
