Protecting copyrights: how e-books will be like parking meters
Article Abstract:
Vital Source Technolgies founder Robert T. Watkins has come up with VitalBook, a technology for storing textbooks on DVD disks with enough restrictions to safeguard it against copying. Students can modify the electronic books to fit their personal curriculum as publishers save the cost of printing. However, digital rights managment, that makes the technology possible, can give companies the power to impose endless new charges for material. Dental students may pay up to $5,000 to use VitalBook for all 4 years. Colleges must also agree to make buying the electronic book mandatory, protecting the publisher from illegal copies. When publishers sell their wares via a contract, they can impose any restriction they deem necessary.

Network Solutions sells marketers its Web database
Article Abstract:
VeriSign unit Network Solutions is making its vast reservoir of about 6 million registered Internet addresses available to the public. The company has actually been selling such data for a year but the new need for dot-com cash makes the pitch to direct marketing compelling. The sold data would be stripped of e-mail addresses and only businesses would be included in marketing efforts. Privacy advocates are troubled.

Net of fame; who rules the Web? Pamela Anderson Lee, the B-movie actress; linked to a naughty video, she's a massive draw -- regrettably, at times; that 'GNP' of $77 million
Article Abstract:
Pamela Anderson Lee is arguably one of the Web's top draws, with perhaps 1% of existing Web pages containing references to her. That works out to about 145,000 out of 150 million pages. Some sites merely mention her name as a means of getting 'hits' on their sites. Others offer access to images or video for a fee, usually without Ms. Lee's permission. Part of this noteriety was fueled by the appearance and subsequent availability of a video featuring Mr. and Ms. Lee in compromising positions. The Lee's were unable to block distribution of the film; one vendor has sold $10 million worth of copies.
