Sun lawsuit is latest shot at Microsoft
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems' lawsuit against Microsoft marks the latest backlash against long-term Microsoft business planning. The Sun suit alleges that Microsoft is attempting to sabotage an effort by Sun and its partners to develop Sun's Java software language as a viable platform competitor with Microsoft's dominant Windows OSes. Sun now is leading a consortium of Microsoft rivals that accuse Microsoft of threatening a range of industries beyond the computer industry. Java will have difficulty in competing against Microsoft's monopoly on personal computing. Successful attacks against Microsoft could weaken the software giant's plans to enter other markets, according to analysts and industry executives. Among the new Microsoft-targeted markets are set-top boxes for cable TV and financial software for banks. Microsoft fears that Silicon Valley in particular is unfairly portraying the company as a predator.

Microsoft returns fire at the U.S., rivals
Article Abstract:
Microsoft is mounting a campaign to defend itself against government antitrust investigators as well as rival detractors. At a news conference in Washington, DC, Microsoft executives spoke out against the Justice Department, which in Oct 1997 charged Microsoft with violating a 1995 consent decree. At issue is whether Microsoft can include Internet software in its Windows operating system. Microsoft says it has the right to do so and says competitors are trying to use the government's powers to hobble it. On Nov 10, Microsoft asked a federal judge to throw out the Justice Department's lawsuit. Meanwhile, Microsoft is organizing to counter a two-day conference sponsored by consumer advocate Ralph Nader, which is titled 'Appraising Microsoft and its Global Strategy.'
