Sun's fiscal 3rd-period net jumped 33%; new thrust in strategy to target hot market of network computing
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems records an impressive $143.3 million in net income for 1st qtr 1996 on total revenue of $1.84 billion, an increase of 33% from the same quarter in 1995. The financial report considerably exceeds many analysts expectations and is due primarily to Sun's continued success in the network computing market. The increasing corporate reliance on Internet technology for the implementation of intranets is driving the entire network computing industry, and Sun is strategically placed to take complete advantage of the market trend. To this end, Sun also introduces the Ultra Enterprise, a line of high-end SPARC-based servers that are expected to compete favorably with products from HP and IBM. The Ultra Enterprise line will provide hot-swappable technology and enhanced performance for as much as 45% less than competing units.

Quarterly net doubles at Sun Microsystems
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc surprises skeptical analysts and investors by reporting 4th qtr FY 1993 net income of $76.1 million, or 72 cents per share, up more than 100 percent from $37.7 million, or 37 cents per share, in 4th qtr FY 1992. Wall Street had expected earnings of 40 cents to 65 cents. Quarterly revenue was $1.26 billion, up 30 percent from $972.7 million in the year-before period. Sun boosted its gross profit margins to nearly 43 percent, up from 40.2 percent in the previous quarter, indicating that it has stabilized its pricing and controlled costs, analysts say. Strong sales of the Solaris and Solaris 2 operating systems in the quarter indicate that Sun's software strategy may be working. Sun leads the workstation industry with a 40 percent share, but has come under competition from Silicon Graphics Inc and HP.
