New Age Bookstore Changes with the Times
Article Abstract:
Yes is a bookshop in Washington, D.C., which is prospering in the face of stiff competition from chain bookstores and the recession. One of the keys to the success of Yes (which opened in 1972) is that the store's owners have, to some degree, specialized, have remained sensitive to market changes, diversified their product line, and offer personal service. The store does not carry 'popular' books, yet what it does carry is so comprehensive that almost thirty percent of the business is through mail orders. Recently the store started to carry microcomputer titles and educational software. Catalog abstracts (which can be used to order through the mail) are available - by subject - which detail the many offerings in the store. Yes has achieved success by finding a niche for itself and by attracting loyal customers in the competitive bookselling market.
