Digital says it was again profitable in 2d quarter
Article Abstract:
DEC reported a $3.19 million net income, or 15 cents per share, for 2nd qtr FY 1997, down from profits of $148.8 million, or 91 cents per share, for 2nd qtr FY 1996. DEC revenues for the quarter declined to $3.36 billion from $3.95 billion 2nd qtr FY 1996. The company regained profitability after posting a $66 million loss in 1st qtr FY 1997. DEC's PC unit was profitable in the quarter, despite having suffered losses throughout the previous year. DEC Chmn and CEO Robert Palmer predicted increased business throughout FY 1997, but also warned that revenues may decline in the 3rd qtr. He reported that an influx of orders in late Dec 1996 prevented the company from filling $50 million worth of Alpha system orders. Analysts worry that the poor sales of DEC's Alpha microprocessor will affect its future profitability. DEC's shares closed at $36.75 on Jan 16, 1997, an increase of $2.50.

NCR forming an alliance with Computer Associates; its hardware to match the other's software
Article Abstract:
NCR and Computer Associates International have entered an agreement enabling each company to encourage its customers to purchase the other company's products. New versions of Computer Associates' Unicenter TNG software will be written to run on NCR hardware. Unicenter will incorporate NCR's previous software, which included HP and internally developed network management programs. Computer Associates, the world's second largest independent software company, announced a similar arrangement with DEC in Apr 1996. The NCR agreement is expected to help Computer Associates recover from its 4th qtr 1996 revenue losses. The company hopes to gain some of NCR's European customers. NCR, which has also lost revenue, will be able to focus on its core businesses rather than on software development.
