After heady gains, Western Digital may be heading for a slowdown
Article Abstract:
Some analysts do not believe the consistent increase in value of Western Digital's stock will continue because there has been no news to explain the large gain in value. Western Digital's stock increased 60% between Jan 1, 1997 and Aug 6, 1997. One reason for concern is that during the coming quarter, unit sales are expected to be flat. Also, Western Digital's inventories are slightly overstocked, which could keep profits down and bring costs up. One of the most serious problems is the company is behind in transferring to magnetoresistive, which is the newest data storage technology. The Western Digital's CEO, Charles Haggerty, predicts a profitable future for the company based on its past profitability, lack of long term debt and the Western Digital's ability to manage its costs well.

Sparq can give your PC a boost- but don't rush to buy
Article Abstract:
Iomega's extremely popular $149 Zip drive is facing competition from SyQuest Technology's $199 Sparq drive. The Sparq disks each hold a gigabyte of informations, 10 times what Zip is capable of holding. Sparq disks are priced at $33 a piece, compared to Zip's $15 disk. The new drive will greatly benefit users with small hard disks on their Windows PCs, by offering them unlimited capacity for programs and a cheap way to store large files. Sparq is also a good investment for users of larger multigigabyte hard disks, as it a inexpensive backup solution. However Sparq is still to rough around the edges for averages to recommend to average users. Problems surfaced in several areas including printing, the installation process and the physical design of the drive.
