Financial information supplier Reuters decided on an Open Learning approach to staff training when it became clear that the level of markets knowledge of its employees had to be increased. The company's Open Learning programme became a key element in the achievement of its strategic business targets. Some employees expressed reservations about Open Learning, and it became clear that a more structured strategy of developing the coaching abilities of front-line managers would have been advisable. However, this individual development programme has seen considerable overall success.

Training programs for performance appraisal: a review
Article Abstract:
Rating employee performance, a crucial aspect of managerial responsibility, can be significantly affected by training programs directed at improving the rating process. A survey of 24 studies of various rater training programs indicated that the most effective were those that actively involved the managers in discussions, practice and feedback exercises. Different types of training programs had different effects on leniency, halo effects, errors, and training accuracy.
