New IBM mainframes, 15% faster than expected, pressure its rivals
Article Abstract:
IBM today is expected to say that its S/390 G5 mainframe generation, due for Aug 1998 shipment, will offer 15% more power than originally unveiled in May 1998. The computer vendor is expected to announce that the top-end S/390 G5 has a capacity of 1,040 millions of instructions per second (MIPS), which would surpass analysts's expectations of around 900 MIPS. The surprising development would put pressure on mainframe rivals Hitachi Data Systems and Amdahl, whose counterparts offer around 975 MIPS and 685 MIPS respectively, according to analysts's estimates. All three companies are planning upgrades for 1999, including an Amdahl 990 MIPS mainframe, due in Jan 1999, and an IBM G6 version. The IBM numbers apparently are valid, according to Gartner Group.

Unisys plans public offering of defense line; sale of profitable operation would likely bring in $800 million to pay debt
Article Abstract:
Unisys Corp, Blue Bell, PA, plans a public offering to sell its defense-electronics business, which will be called Paramax Inc. Unisys hopes to generate about $800 million from the sale, which Unisys will use to reduce its $3.81 billion of debt. Unisys had tried to find a buyer for its defense business but was not able to do so, and therefore has opted to try a public offering. Securities analysts note that it is an example of Unisys' bad luck that the company should find it necessary to sell a defense-related business at a time when the government is making big disarmament announcements. There was not much reaction to the news in the stock market. Unisys' stock fell 12.5 cents on Monday, Sep 30, 1991, to $4.75.
