New Web-based service sends a 'secret agent' to guard your laptop
Article Abstract:
A small start-up in Oregon is offering a service, Solagent, to encrypt or destroy sensitive files on a laptop computer that has been lost or stolen. Users download the 'agent' program from the Solagent Web site. In tests on an IBM ThinkPad running Windows 98, the Solagent proved itself clever and useful, and is well worth the $10 to $40 a year to keep sensitive files out of reach of others, and perhaps even get them back oneself, in the event of loss or theft of ones laptop.

New Ricochet modem hooks up to Internet without a phone line
Article Abstract:
Metricom Inc's new Internet service, Ricochet, provides an Internet connection without the use of telephone lines. Ricochet offers an alternative to the busy signals and dropped connections that are becoming prevalent with standard Internet access. The service costs $29.95 per month, and the wireless modem is an additional $299 to buy or $10 per month to rent. Although Ricochet is priced at 50% more than regular telephone-based access services, it provides a connection that can be run all day without the added cost of additional phone lines. Ricochet's software provides an Internet connection over the wireless modem by automatically configuring a dialer program. The Ricochet system features an e-mail account, but the system also allows users to access e-mail accounts on all standard Internet systems. Ricochet is an efficient system designed primarily for laptop users. Metricom plans to expand the system in 1997, but it is currently available only in Seattle, Washington, DC and San Francisco.
