New patent shakes up chip firms
Article Abstract:
The semiconductor industry went into a frenzy in Aug 1990 when it discovered that the US Patent and Trademark Office awarded a far-reaching patent that covers many of the industry's microprocessors to Gilbert P. Hyatt. Analysts say that the patent could drain hundreds of millions of dollars from the semiconductor industry if it survives challenges. Hyatt applied for a patent in 1970 for an invention that he claims covers microprocessors. Ted Hoff of Intel Corp, which rolled out its first commercial microprocessor in 1971, has been regarded as the inventor of the microprocessor. Semiconductor industry lawyers are investigating the patent and its potential impact on the industry. Hyatt could demand royalties from all the major chip makers if he can enforce his patent.

Hitachi to talk with Motorola on ending suit
Article Abstract:
Motorola Inc and Hitachi Ltd attempt to settle their law suits over patent infringements of the Motorola MC 68030 and Hitachi H8/532 integrated circuits. The companies have a preliminary agreement designed to meet the federal court's pressure on the two companies. No details on the draft agreement, described as being 'on the table,' are available. Hitachi hopes to have an agreement in two to three months, but such an agreement is expected to cover only these two microprocessors. The stay that Motorola obtained on a court-ordered sales cessation is no longer in force, which may have contributed to the negotiation effort.
