New software tackles the problem of getting onto Web
Article Abstract:
PC users finally have several effective options for accessing the Internet's World Wide Web including access via a commercial online service such as Prodigy or America Online, or access via an integrated software package such as Netscape Communication's $40 Netscape Navigator Personal Edition. The World Wide Web has heretofore been extremely difficult to access because it required installing dial-up software for an access provider and a browser program. Today, the Web can be accessed via built-in browsers from the commercial online services. Prodigy and America Online both provide access to the Web, but their browsers are somewhat limited and the user must endure the services' proprietary content before reaching the Web. Netscape's Netscape Navigator Personal Edition is an integrated Web package that includes both dial-up software for access provider connections and the market leading Web browser. Quarterdeck Corp's $29 Quarterdeck Mosaic includes a good browser and an easy-to-install access application.

Computer viruses are nothing to sneeze at, but they're curable
Article Abstract:
Computer viruses are making a large proportion of computer users nervous about the possibilities of contamination, but the danger is not as likely as some people think. A variety of software companies are confronting the spread of viruses and capitalizing on the media hype by offering new anti-virus products. Over 1,000 strains of viruses exist, but only about 50 are common and few exist outside research environments. The Michelangelo virus, which can wipe out hard disks, will probably affect few people. Apple Macintosh computers are immune to the virus, but some computer users have been discussing the presence of a virus that can cause crashes on Macs. Two viruses, Jerusalem-B and Stoned, accounted for 74 percent of the virus incidents in 1991. Certus' Novi program and Fifth Generation's Untouchable are two anti-virus programs that claim to provide such efficient generic virus protection that no updates are needed.

Windows 95 passes the test of time for home PC users
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's promotions in association with the Aug 1995 release of Windows 95 brought the company tremendous revenue from sales, but prudent consumers waited until others had purchased the operating system before making the decision to do so themselves. In the six months since its release, Windows 95 has proven to be a reliable improvement over previous operating systems, and users with the hardware to support it would do well to upgrade. Microsoft is readying a bundle of fixes entitled 'service pack' that it will make available to users via the Internet. Once installation is achieved, Windows 95's mechanics are similar to those of the Macintosh OS, and Windows 95 crashes less than many other operating systems. Basic hardware requirements include a 486-based system, 500MB hard disk, 8MB RAM, and a CD-ROM drive, 16MB RAM and a Pentium processor are suggested.
