Corporate employment recruiters are using the Internet to promote company image and advertise for open positions, but online recruitment often misses the targeted audience. Anyone can use the Internet, and many unsuitable candidates apply online. Mount Isa Mines Holdings Ltd. (MIM) advertises on the website employment.com.au, which received three million hits and 172,000 job inquires in January 1999. MIM receives about 700 Internet applications a year. The web site's developers will be introducing filters to help streamline the recruitment process.

Online car sales park in a niche

The growth of Internet car sales is beginning to affect Australian automobile dealerships' business plans. A Forrester Research report predicts that dealers will have to focus more on servicing customers who make their purchases online. Leading the way is Ford Motor Company of Australia Ltd., which has established a new dealership concept, the Ford Tickford Experience (FTE). FTE includes a Web site that allows customers to configure an automobile and order it.
