The list of Australasia's top 500 companies is dominated by old-economy industries. Companies appearing in the list experienced a combined net profit of A$19.5 billion for the first half of 2000, up 34.6% from the year earlier period. Further analysis of the performance of Australia's top 500 companies is presented.

Soaring oil prices and the collapse of the euro and New Zealand and Australian currencies affected the All Ordinaries index in September which rose by only 0.2%. Issues concerning the performances of fund managers are presented, with those who held a diversification strategy having the best returns.
