On the folly of rewarding A, while hoping for B
Article Abstract:
Reward systems often fail to improve the organizations in which they are implemented because they inadvertently encourage undesired behavior. Reward systems also fail when managers set simple goals that are quantifiable or are easily observed, or when they are established to create a sense of obligation. Managers can ensure that reward systems succeed by determining the behaviors that are recognized and reinforcing positive outcomes.

The new story about job rotation
Article Abstract:
Interviews with managers from a large pharmaceutical enterprise revealed that job rotation had a positive impact on both promotion rates and salary enhancement. Job rotation also facilitated the workers' acquisition of new skills. New workers were rotated more often than senior workers but better performers were also rotated more often. Job rotation had a more significant impact on salary increases than on promotion rate.

Companies all over the world are forced to cut costs and downsize their workforce due to pressures brought by competition.
