Cable technology may make Internet as accessible as TV. (Jones International's trial services) (Personal Technology) (Internet
Article Abstract:
Cable modem technology offers the most reasonable possibility for providing a large number of consumers with the timely and cost-efficient Internet access that is necessary to increase general use of the Internet. Cable modems can transmit as much as 350 times more digital data per second than existing telephone modem technology, and ISDN does not even approach the transmission levels of cable modems. Jones International, among others, is experimenting with trial cable-modem services to some of its customers, and such a service greatly improves downloading and linking times associated with using the Web. However, the initial cost-model for the service is prohibitively expensive for all but the most ardent Internet users, and access times can slow substantially if many users log on at the same time.

The Web produces a home-grown source for breaking news
Article Abstract:
The CNET Web site known as News.Com is the best on-line publication on the Web today because of its informative content, up-to-the-minute news and solid use of the Web as a medium. News.Com is the headlines section of CNET's Web offerings. CNET focuses on the computer industry and the Internet, and it employs a news staff of 32 reporters, most of whom were taken from leading computer publications. News.Com has now eclipsed the on-line versions of two important computer magazines, InfoWorld and PC Week. The CNET site, however, has no print counterpart. News.Com features about 25 original stories each day, as well as thoughtful editorials from Opinions Editor Margie Wylie and weekly interviews with industry leaders such as Bill Gates and Intel's Andy Grove.
