Orange County found in bond default

Orange County, CA, could not pay $600 million it owed for municipal bonds in Jul 1995, an action that led to Standard and Poor's to declare the county in default. The credit rating agency believes that the bankrupt county will not be able to meet other loan obligations since its Dec 1994 bankruptcy.

Thai workers found in virtual slavery

Eight people were arrested in a raid conducted by the California Dept of Industrial Relations on Aug 2, 1995. They were accused of forcing 70 illegal aliens from Thailand to work in a garment factory in slavery-like conditions. Many well-known retailers had bought goods from the sweatshop.

Three Los Angeles, CA, garment factories were raided on Aug 23, 1995, by the Immigration and Naturalization Dept. The owners of Good Line, ASC Fashion and Virgil Apparel were charged with violating laws on minimum wage, overtime and child labor.
