Organizational boundary spanning in institutionalized environments
Article Abstract:
Using an institutional framework, this study tested hypotheses concerning the differences in boundary-spanning strategies between freestanding organizations and organizations that are members of multiorganizational systems. We compared the effects of both environmental variables and organizational characteristics, using data from a nationwide sample of 901 hospitals. Results show that membership in a system increases the likelihood of hospitals using bridging strategies. Further, organizational complexity in boundary spanning mirrors complexity in an institutional environment in a complex, not simply isomorphic, manner. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Criteria for Grouping Nursing Subunits in Hospitals
Article Abstract:
Technology is seen as the basis for determining the grouping of nursing subunits within hospitals. Other factors affect the grouping decision; these include hospital size, location, increased professionalism of nurses, and task uncertainty. Since organization structure and design are critical, related decisions should be made on empirical reasoning and not assumptions.

The fit between technology and structure as a predictor of performance in nursing subunits
Article Abstract:
A field study of 27 nursing units sought to determine the relationship between performance variables and structural design. Regression analysis indicated that the fit between technology and structure was a better predictor of high performance than technology and structure combined.
