Ousted CEO of Compaq offers defense
Article Abstract:
Eckhard Pfeiffer said his bosses on the board of Compaq Computer Corp. were apprised of the company's lowered earnings and that he had tried to turn around declining sales and mounting inventory. Chairman Benjamin Rosen had no comment. Mr. Pfeiffer resigned after Compaq reported $281 million in earnings on sales of $9.42 billion in Q1. This was a 13% decline from Q4. Analysts point to a decline in inventory turn: Q4 was 15.5; Q1 was 13.7 turns. Other large PC industry companies such as Microsoft, Intel, IBM and Dell all reported first quarter results that exceeded forecasts.

Year 2000 and home PCs: the fix may not be in
Article Abstract:
Home users may want to test their computers and software for Year 2000 problems. Set the clock and date on your PC to 11:58 pm and 1999-12-31, then shut it off three minutes. Upon restarting, the date should show 2000-01-01, and any file that a user creates and saves with their favorite applications should have that date as well. If the computer or file shows another date, check with the program's manufacturer, via the Web, for a patch or update. Going forward, authorities recommend using a four digit year format when entering any date into a spreadsheet or other program.
