Out of AOL's shadow, MindSpring faces growing pains
Article Abstract:
Atlanta, Georgia-based MindSpring Enterprises Inc. has grown from a free Internet service provider, based in Charles Brewer's studio apartment, to an online service dedicated to providing excellent service to over one million customers. The company was established by Brewer five years ago because of difficulties he was having with his then-service provider NetCom, later acquired by MindSpring, as well as a desire to work in a more humane and principled corporate environment. After acquiring SpryNet, Pipeline from PSINet Inc. and a substantial stake in NetCom, MindSpring faces significant challenges in remaining true to its corporate ideals. Mindful of the many technological problems his growing company must overcome, Brewer believes that MindSpring's continued success is linked to employee commitment within an enlightened corporate culture.

Weak Viagra sales hurt Pfizer's earnings
Article Abstract:
Pfizer Inc. reported disappointing third-quarter earnings attributed in part to weaker-than-expected demand for Viagra. Wall Street may have been aware of Pfizer's disappointing performance before the company's announcemen,t as the company's stock plunged $5.50 or 6%. Pfizer reported net income more than doubled to $1.4 billion from $596 million a year earlier, partly because of selling a number of its medical-technology units.
