Due to the declining birth rate, those fifty-five and older, account for a larger percentage of the population, and marketing divisions of companies should look to this group and their buying power. Doctor Allan, a psychologist and marketing consultant, shoots down some old myths about the elderly; namely, they are not suffering from poverty, but actually account for one-third of the wealth of the country. Also, they do spend more money than previously was believed - about $160 billion on consumer goods in 1973. Cosmetic firms are developing products for the over-fifty-five. Tourism is romancing and winning this group who have the money and the time to vacation.
