Small companies gain ground in notebooks by buying from Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Second-tier computer manufacturers are making steady inroads in the notebook computer market as high-quality and reasonably-priced equipment is offered by new Taiwanese firms. The notebook computer market has been dominated by large manufacturers including Compaq, Toshiba, IBM, Apple and NEC. These companies have been the leaders of the market because notebook computers are extremely difficult to engineer, which drives up prices. Also, an international screen shortage prevented smaller firms from purchasing sufficient numbers of screens. Today, Taiwanese companies have begun to produce high-quality machines at reasonable prices, which second-tiered vendors can incorporate in their designs. Taiwan is expected to ship an estimated 25% of all notebook computers in 1995. The screen shortage problem has reversed, which has also helped open up the notebook industry. Second-tiered companies include AST Research, NCR, DEC, HP, Dell and Texas Instruments.

Compaq's CEO sees PCs reshaping our world into one like George Jetson's
Article Abstract:
Compaq CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer believes that within the next five years users will communicate with portable devices, similar to a Walkman, that will function as a phone, stereo, television, fax and computer, rolled into one. Based on a draft of Pfeiffer's planned keynote address for the PC Expo, Pfeiffer claims the computer will turn into a 'universal tool,' which will transform everyday life. The Compaq CEO also argues that the PC has not been given its just due for the changes it has already brought. Pfeiffer's speech will outline the next 15 years of the PC industry, saying the computer will make its influence known across a broader spectrum than previously imagined. Not known as a visionary, Pfeiffer is reportedly basing his predictions on 'straight-line extensions' of existing technology.
