PCs may be teaching kids the wrong lessons
Article Abstract:
Evidence is mounting that using PCs to teach children educational skills such as reading and math is not effective, and some critics contend that learning with a computer is as detrimental as watching TV to children's development. Learning with a computer can be effective for children with learning disabilities and short attention spans because the fast moving graphics and interactive scenarios keep them interested. Critics note, however, that PCs can also promote passive learning and destroy creativity. Experts contend that almost 75% of computer educational software does not have any real educational value, and many programs are merely computer games with a few educational skills tossed in for marketing purposes. Also, computer educational titles usually are designed as rote drill programs, which educators believe are the worst type of learning because they undermine creativity and problem solving.

IBM alert: Big Blue may raise payout
Article Abstract:
Wall Street analysts are predicting that IBM will raise its dividend for the first time since May 1989. The dividend increase is likely to increase IBM's stock temporarily but the stock's long-term success will be based on other factors such as revenue growth. IBM has a surplus of cash, and company officials are disappointed with the company's recent losses in the stock market. Some analysts predict that a small increase of 50 cents a year, which would raise the annual dividend to $1.50, would raise investor confidence that the company is headed in the right direction. The increase would also be good for shareholders, who have had the dividend reduced from $4.84 in 1992 to $1 in Jul 1993. Analysts warn that even with a substantial increase in the dividend, IBM's stock will not increase dramatically because investors will be watching long-term revenue growth.
